Preferred coaching styles and leadership methods by athletes and their effectiveness! Jason Appleton Southerrn Oregon University, Instructor: Garth Pittman Research Strategies, Fall 2005 Summary: This is an investigation of different coaching methods and styles of leadership in which are most effective and preferred by Athletes. The various leadership styles are explained and examined. The present study found that there isnt one style that is most effective or preferred by all athletes specifically. As we enter the world of sports several different theories and methods of coaching are used and preformed each day. Each coach innovates their specific style or way of coaching to their athletes. Leadership has been researched extensively but yet scholars are yet to find or compile an exact definition. As (Kent, Todd, 2004) explain there have been many efforts in defining leadership and several ideas have been compiled yet there is still a distinct discrepancy amongst scholars. Author Chelladurai breaks down leadership into three elements: (1) leadership is a behavior process, (2) leadership is interpersonal in nature, and (3) leadership is aimed at influencing and motivating members toward group goals (pg. 160). These are the ways he focuses leaderships and their intentions towards lea ding. Kent and Todd further discuss the importance of leadership and its distinct aspect to society and organizations, and that future successes are largely dependent upon it (2004). Another area in the domain of leadership styles is when (Zorn Violanti 1993) define leadership as patterns of behaviors, assumptions, attitudes, or traits exhibited by individuals in attempting to provide leadership (pg. 70). Additionally we further examine (Bloom, Vallà ©e, 2005; Chelladurai, 1990; Chelladurai Seleh 1978; Zhang et. al. 1997) in which they break down the different styles of leadership into five categories, autocratic, democratic, positive feedback, social support and training and instruction. Hypermasculinity is evident throughout society and has deeply affected both men and women. Hypermasculinity was coined in 1984 and defined as an exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior which emphasizes physical strength, increased aggression, and sexuality (Mosher Sirkin 1984). Boys are told that they have to grow up to be â€Å"men†, which means that they have to develop masculine traits, such as rational thinking, boldness, increased strength, and a sense of competition. Masculinity (masculine traits) are not considered to be bad, however hypermasculinity enforces an increased sense of masculinity and states that any form of femininity in boys is bad. Feminine traits include gentleness, communication, nurturing, and emotional expressiveness, however these qualities are usually considered â€Å"weaker† than masculine traits. Hypermasculinity states that boys and men should not have any feminine traits, and reinforces that femininity is weak to the point where femi nine qualities are shamed. This mentality creates a multitude of problems in society including sexual aggression, violence, homophobia, and potentially poor academic performance. The essence of being a â€Å"man† according to hypermasculinity states that the male figure must be the dominant one. Hamlet and his Games Essay Since the World War II the paintings movement had gathered considerable momentum. The political realities of the time- from 1943 to early 1950s- the War, the Holocaust in Europe, the apparent threat of the world destruction by atomic bomb, the conservative reaction of McCarthyism in United States and even intensified hurly burly of city life-resulted in a movement called Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism combined two tendencies already evident in the twentieth century; the drive to create totally abstract works and express emotion through the use of brilliant colors. The leading figure of this new painting style was Jackson Pollock, who produced his large works by dribbling strands of paint on the canvas, involving his whole body in the activity and creating sensations of sparkling energy and movement. The term Action Painting was coined to describe how Pollock worked. Pollock felt, he could become emotionally involved with his work and through it communicate his emotions to the viewer. A more violent and intense form of Action Painting was devised by Willem de Kooning from whose seeming destruction of form gradually emerged a bodily image.During the fifties, older and younger artists alike were affected by the trend towards discarding all standards of form. Mark Rothko developed a uniquely personal, reserved, almost mystical mode of painting in which colors interacted as they appeared to shift in space.In this geometrical abstraction, a clarity of design appeared, together with the use of flickering effects of color. The example of Abstract expressionism was followed within a short time by artists all over the world. In Great Britain, abstract art took on fresh importance when new relationships of form and color were highlighted in two and three dimensions. A number of painters in Belgium, Holland and Denmark added the aggressive aspects of Abstract Expressionism to their own versions of Northern-European Expressionism. Again, inGermany and Italy there also emerged followers of the new fashion who strove to express their own feelings through unobstructed out-pouring in paint. This led to matter painting in which very thick layers of paint, mixed with plaster and manipulated on the surface of the canvas. Character Sketch of Bathsheba Essay Bathsheba is the heroine of the novel who is depicted as a continually growing and changing character. She is not a perfect or ideal woman and has her faults but overall her accomplishments and virtues definitely outweigh the shortcomings of her personality. Bathsheba is first portrayed as a poor attractive cottage girl admiring herself in a mirror. This vanity, Gabriel Oak is quick to observe is her chief fault. At the tollgate too she does not consider it necessary to thank Gabriel for paying the additional two pence she had refused to pay the gatekeeper to allow her to pass. Vanity was indeed a part of the innermost core of her being. She had a vain womans desire to be looked at and admired and felt ignored when Farmer Boldwood was indifferent to her beauty and looks when she first visited Casterbridge market. However despite her self-confidence and independence she was an extremely jealous and possessive woman. It was this weakness that made her succumb to Troys charms and agree to marry him when he tells her that has met another woman more beautiful than her. Initially she also feels jealous of the dead Fanny Robin when she sees Troy kissing her and proclaiming his true love for her and calling her his very own wife! She claims her love and right as his wife and when he rebukes her it leads to an awful scene between them and then their separation. Although well educated she was considered too wild and unpredictable to be a governess. She was head strong and impulsive. Her hasty marriage to Troy, even when she had gone with the intentions to renounce him was a manifestation of her reckless behaviour. Sending Boldwood a Valentine card with Marry Me on it was another impulsive action, which had dire consequences. Her outbursts of temper were also noticed in the way she stormed at her maids for speaking ill of Troy and dismissing Gabriel for offending her with his frank criticism. Despite her faults Bathsheba was candour itself. She was essentially a good woman and had a sympathetic nature. She truly regretted her frivolous act that resulted in arousing Boldwoods passion. She was no schemer or trifler with the affection of men. The tragic end of Fanny who was the object of her husbands love also aroused her sympathy and the way she handled her burial and Troys showed her sincerity. Falling in love with Troy for a romantically inclined woman like Bathsheba did not imply a serious fault of character only a lack of insight into character. On the other hand, Bathshebas courage and love for independence were her admirable traits. She was an Elizabeth in brain and a Mary Stuart in spirit. She acts bravely in saving Gabriel from suffocation when there is a fire in his hut. Her cleverness is admired by the trustees of Weatherbury and they appoint her mistress of her uncles estate after he dies. She takes the unconventional step of managing the farm herself without the help of a bailiff and wins the loyalty of the workmen by giving them a bonus as appreciation of their support. She acts responsibly in sending men to search for Fanny. She displays unconventional strength and confidence when she attends the market at Casterbridge where she is the only woman farmer. She is sincere and involved in her work and personally supervises operations such as sheep -shearing, harvesting, haymaking and attends to the safety of her corn ricks. Again on Troys death she bears her misfortune and widowhood with rare calmness and fortitude. With great strength and a sense of both duty and loyalty as a wife she prepares Troys corpse for burial and decides to place it next to Fanny having shed her feelings of jealousy. It was for these reasons that Hardy claims that she belongs to the category of women who become mothers of heroes!!
